Lancers from Eastern Wyoming College visit Lincoln Elementary

January 18, 2006

TORRINGTON, WY - On Wednesday, January 11th, three Lancer basketball players, Brandon Lawson (73" tall), Rodrigo Silva (79" tall) and Craig Hamer (81" tall) visited Nan Hornbecks' kindergarten class at Lincoln Elementary. Before the players arrived at the school, the students were given the players height in inches. Using the player's information from the roster, the teacher then made a huge cardboard chart for each of the players. The project focused on understanding measurements.

When the players arrived they were each assigned a group of children wearing the player's jersey number on their nametags. With a clipboard and student recording sheets in hand, Lawson, Silva, and Hamer each got down on the floor and measured the children with the same non-standard units. The groups rotated and each student had the opportunity to be measured by each player. The children then took their recording sheets home to share with their parents their personal measurements.

Some other fun aspects of the unit included the boys posing for pictures with each student, autographing posters, and viewing game videos from Coach Ward.

Nan Hornbeck commented, "It was so impressive when the "big boys"came to our classroom! I cannot begin to tell you what a wonderful experience this was for both myself and my class. Brandon, Rodrigo, and Craig were so great with the children. EWC has great reason to be proud of these "big boys!"
