EWC Now Offering SMARTHINKING

September 1, 2004

(Torrington, WY) Eastern Wyoming College is now offering around-the-clock tutoring and academic support online. SMARTHINKING is a new online tutoring service that allows students to have access to tutors online 24/7. College students are busy. Many hold down a job, support a family, or are simply involved in numerous extracurricular activities. This new service will allow students to get academic help anytime. It will supplement the excellent, face-to-face tutoring services currently available to students at EWC. Online tutoring increases student success and retention. It is also an opportunity to improve services to all students, especially those who are taking classes through distance education.

Tutors are available to help with: Basic Math, Algebra, Geometry/Trig, Calculus I&II, Statistics, Economics, Accounting, Grammar, Composition/Writing, Brainstorming, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Spanish. Through the SMARTHINKING website, students may ask questions of trained, qualified e-structors (tutors) by "dropping-in," submitting questions for next day response, submitting essays for critique and return, and pre-scheduling sessions. Through the agreement, each credit student enrolled at EWC will be eligible for 10 hours of free tutoring each academic year. In addition, all interactions are saved, permitting on-demand review and analysis by the student or institution. In the past two years, SMARTHINKING has provided over 300,000 online tutoring sessions to over 70,000 students from over 300 schools.

Dee Ludwig, Associate Dean of Instruction stated, "We are excited to be able to offer online tutoring services to our EWC students via SMARTHINKING. I believe it will be most beneficial for outreach and distance learning students since they do not have ready access to the on-campus tutors. This service also is available to all EWC credit students whether they are taking one class or many. It is also available to all Wyoming community college students and was an initiative fully supported by the Wyoming Distance Education Consortium (WyDEC). The WyDEC is comprised of representatives from all seven community colleges, and Aaron Bahmer and I are both members of it."
