EWC Students Participate in Skills Usa Competition

(Torrington, WY) Students from Eastern Wyoming College traveled to Casper on April 14-16 to participate in SkillsUSA Championships with this year's official theme as "Step Up to Success." SkillsUSA Vocational and Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) is a professional organization for students in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations. It focuses on leadership, citizenship, and character development. The Club offers Eastern Wyoming College students special opportunities to further enhance their schooling and skill development through activities, trips, and competitions at the local, state, and national level.
Competing in the Business Division: Abigail Cantwell placed 2nd in Job Demonstration; Pete Caweizel earned a 2nd place in Technical Computer Applications; Cody Livingston won 1st place in Extemporaneous Speaking, 3rd in Prepared Speech, and 3rd in Job Interview; Mikkijo McFarland placed 2nd in Prepared Speech, and 2nd in Extemporaneous Speaking; Matt Rolf claimed 1st place in Computer Hardware Maintenance, while Jaime Sage claimed 1st in Promotional Bulletin Board. Mikkijo McFarland and Jamie Sage were elected as State Officers. Advisors for the Business Division are Kristi McGuire and Kim Griggs, instructors at EWC.
There were 39 welding competitors from various colleges around the state. Results for EWC: Larry Gallant placed 1st in Welding and 1st in Machine Tooling; Bud Miller won 3rd in Welding; and Cam Huston was 2nd in Machine Tooling. Others competing for EWC were: Samantha Thrasher, Todd Wiseman, Scott Sims, Beau Rourke, JR Wheelock, Tessa Kammerer, Daniel Taussig, Todd Wilson, and Kyle Kilgore. Advisors for the Welding and Machine Tooling Division are Russell Pontarolo, Leland Vetter, and Stan Nicolls. Pontarolo stated, "This is the 3rd year of competing and the 2nd year of sending winners to nationals. The students involved with competition represented EWC well."
Nationals will be held in Kansas City, Missouri the last week in June where 1st place winners from each state compete against each other. Larry Gallant, Cody Livingston, Matt Rolf, and Jamie Sage will be representing Eastern Wyoming College.
