EWC IHSA Club Competes at CSU
March 3, 2003
(Torrington, WY) The Eastern Wyoming College IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Showing Association) team recently competed at CSU in the Hunt Seat Show and Stock Seat Show on February 7-9 and
February 21-23 respectively. Dr. Susan Walker, EWC instructor and IHSA sponsor, accompanied students (as pictured, left to right) JoLeen Krueger of Shepard, MT; Kim Blauert of Gillette, WY; Samantha Thrasher of Vershire, VT; Lisa Deutsch of Northwood, ND; and Katie Schroeder of Ogallala, NE to
each weekend event. There were nine teams and approximately one hundred competitors both weekends.
According to Dr. Walker the IHSA shows are unique in that no one is allowed to use their own horse, there is no warm-up on the horses by the competitors and no personal tack is allowed. Competitors may, also, be asked to switch horses during a class. Horses and riders are paired randomly by drawing to enable riders to compete solely on their horsemanship ability.
The Hunt Seat Show is an English-style riding competition that tests the riders skills in jumping fences and form. Samantha Thrasher earned a 2nd, 4th, and 6th place each day in the Novice Over Fences Division.
The Stock Seat Show is a western-style riding competition that tests the riders skills in horsemanship. In the Advanced II Division Samantha Thrasher won 3rd, 6th, and 4th place; JoLeen Krueger won 5th place on Saturday, February 22; and Katie Schroeder won 5th place on Sunday, February 23. In the Intermediate II Division Kim Blauert placed 6th each day; and Lisa Deutsch placed 5th and 6th for the weekend.
Each placing is worth a point value and after accumulating thirty-five points students can compete at Regionals.
